The opening day of the football season is an occasion that brings fresh and renewed hope for all football fans, young and old... possibly even for this season.

With the 2026/27 fixtures recently released, the thoughts of many will have turned to Saturday 15th August when the League One season gets underway.

Who are the new faces wearing the crisp, newly designed royal blue shirts? Will the expensive centre-forward score on his debut? Why have they changed the build up to kick-off?! And the half time declaration, with 100% certainty, that the new winger is useless.

Opening day hopes can quickly turn into nightmares. In the dead of night, in the silent streets of sleepy Shepshed, you can sometimes hear my cries, coming from another Michael Ricketts-shaped nightmare, stemmed from our shocking 5-0 opening day defeat to Bolton Wanderers at Filbert Street in 2001.
