Two players with City connections saw their nations face off in a tense Group C tie on Friday night: Bilal El Khannouss’s Morocco emerged 1-0 winners against George Hirst’s Scotland.
The Atlas Lions got off to the perfect start, going ahead through Ismael Saibari in the second minute. El Khannouss played 84 minutes on the left side of the Moroccan attack, registering one shot on target and creating a chance.
Scotland struggled to get into the game in the first period but were more competitive in the second, despite failing to register a shot on target in the entire match. Hirst remained on the bench.
Scotland’s three points from their opening victory over Haiti should be enough to see them through as one of the best third-placed teams, even if they fail to get a result against Brazil in the final group game on Wednesday evening.
