Premier League champion Kasper Schmeichel has announced his retirement from football at the age of 39.

The legendary former Leicester City captain and Denmark goalkeeper has made the decision after being told his serious shoulder injury would keep him out of football for over a year.

Schmeichel is out of contract after being absent from Martin O'Neill's Celtic since February and after consulting with surgeons has decided to end his playing career.

Speaking to TV2 in Denmark, Schmeichel said "I believe that now is the right time. This is a decision that has been made for me".
