Emily van Egmond's Australia side suffered a narrow defeat in the Women's Asian Cup final, losing 1-0 to Japan in Sydney.

Three of the last four finals have featured these two nations and, remarkably, Japan have won all three by a 1-0 scoreline.

Spurs forward Maika Hamano, on loan from Chelsea, curled in the only goal of the game from just outside the box in the 17th minute, clinching Japan's third continental title.

In front of an attendance of 74,397, heavily weighted towards the host nation, Australia made a positive start.
