Obituary: Paul Matthews (1946-2026)

Born in Leicester, Paul Matthews was an excellent rugby player in his youth, representing the county schools. But his skills with the round ball would be where Matthews would make his sporting career.

He made his debut for City after advancing through their youth ranks, as an 18 year old against Aston Villa at Filbert Street, 19th April 1965. His City career was defined by being a player who had to fill a position of a City great. Initially at outside-right replacing Jackie Sinclair. After a year away from the first team, Matthews returned to the first team with the daunting task of filling the position of David Gibson in Frank O'Farrell's City team.
