Leicester City have strengthened their midfield with the signing of Republic of Ireland international Will Smallbone, with the 26-year-old arriving at King Power Stadium on a free transfer.

Smallbone has signed a three-year contract after his 18 year association with Southampton came to an end during the summer.

And while Leicester supporters could perhaps be forgiven for wondering how many more former Southampton players and staff will arrive, this one in my opinion makes an enormous amount of sense.

Smallbone isn’t simply a player Russell Martin happens to know. He is a midfielder who has already demonstrated that he can be an important part of a Russell Martin team.
