With Gary Rowett’s imminent appointment at Leicester City appearing increasingly likely, the immediate question for supporters is not who he is, but what does he represent?

Rowett has built a long managerial career across the English Football League by being dependable, pragmatic and tactically flexible. He is not a coach wedded to ideology or stylistic dogma. Instead, his reputation rests on his ability to organise teams, restore structure and make them competitive quickly - qualities that could prove vital for a Leicester side searching for consistency.

Rowett’s teams are typically built from the back. Defensive organisation is the foundation of his approach, and he places significant emphasis on compactness between the lines and collective responsibility out of possession.

At previous clubs, his sides have often been difficult to break down, conceding relatively few chances even when facing technically stronger opponents. For Leicester, who have looked woefully vulnerable defensively, this could mean a renewed focus on shape and discipline, particularly in midfield areas where games in the Championship are often won and lost. In possession, Rowett is far from reckless.
