Marti Cifuentes: Where Did It Go Wrong?

Last weekend's departure of manager Marti Cifuentes came as little surprise, but where did it go wrong for the Spanish coach and were there other factors that come into play when evaluating his spell at the Foxes?

The arrival of Cifuentes at the beginning of the summer was met with little fanfare from the Leicester fanbase, with supporters still reeling from a disastrous Premier League campaign that ended in relegation but probably having lofty opinions on what type of manager we could attract.

To us fans, the appointment was one of mediocrity and was not overly exciting considering his CV, with the highlight being QPR’s survival in the Championship in the 2024/25 season. But, having clearly expressed his desire to move away from Loftus Road, he got his wish and joined the Foxes, a club that was seemingly better placed with more potential.

On Cifuentes's part, he was quite likely right. The opportunity to turn the Foxes' fortunes around was a no-brainer and early signs were fairly positive, starting with an opening day win, albeit a struggling one, over Sheffield Wednesday, kicking off his regime the right way.

Add into that the arrival of key players, Jordan James and Aaron Ramsey on loan and Asmir Begovic on a free transfer, these were considered to be positive for a club that clearly had no appetite to spend any money amid ongoing PSR issues. The early signs were ones of general positivity.
