The same old 'Wiping the Slate Clean'

With the Leicester City squad returning for pre-season this week, manager Russell Martin has promised the squad that he's 'wiped the slate clean'. Pete Selby states his belief that many of the first team squad do not deserve their latest chance at the football club.

Leicester City players have reported for pre-season this week, with Russell Martin promising the squad that he's 'wiped the slate clean'.

These are words which supporters have heard on many many occasions when a new manager takes over at a football club. Even mid-season managerial changes would utter the same words to players who have previously downed tools up until then.

An array of reasons could be the case for under-performing players: their own relationship with the previous manager breaking down; playing in a position that doesn’t suit; difficulties with the club regarding contracts; and, on the same page, possible outside influences, including interest from other clubs.

This is certainly not the case with Leicester City in 2026/27.
